Meta tag Optimization
There are specifically only two very important meta tags that will help your ranking they are:
1. Meta description tag - <meta name="description"content="Place Meta Description Text Here - Include Quotation Marks">
2. Meta keyword tag - <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, keyword3, keyword4, etc.">
Rules
1. Keywords must be placed at the upper part for better chance of being indexed
2. Use only keywords that would show relevance to your site.
3. Avoid redundancy on your meta keyword tag
4. Commonly misspelled words must be placed in the meta keywords tag.
5. Meta description tags must be used in all of the web pages that will be optimized.
6. Never ever infringe on any copyright or trademark
7. If at all possible, limit the characters to 250 as the spiders ignore anything beyond their imposed limits (though this may vary from search engine to other search engine)
Meta Description Tags
Meta description tag is the summary of the contents in your website that you give to the search engine. This in turn will be displayed as the summary description of your page in the search results. In effect this will not affect your ranking, meta tag optimization will therefore consider this tag as some sort of a selling description for your site. Think of a paperback. In order for you to have an idea of the story, you look at the back for its summary. The meta description tag is equal to that for your website, so in essence, this will allow the web-surfer an idea if your site is relevant to what they are looking for. The main drawback if you will not use this is that the search engine will just grab anything displayed on your page just to give description, and thus may describe your site in awkward way.
Meta Keyword Tag
Meta keyword tag optimization will have a slightly effect on your ranking. It gives more useful information for the search engines to index. Though not as effective as before, it is still one of the ways for your web site to get a hit.
